Bio
Students must have opportunities to build their sense-of-self through the use of tasks the allow for flexibility. Through tutoring, I hope to build student confidence, develop conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas and how they work together, and grow students "tool-box" for approaching novel problems. I put myself next to students as a learner, building the idea that we can both learn from each other. I will work hard to follow a student's thinking, not pull them towards my own because the goal is to create independence and confidence. In school I struggled with memory and was lead to believe I could not excel at math because of it. However, I have dedicated well over a decade to ensuring the students understand that math is SO much more than memorization; it is problem solving and pattern recognition. If we work together on strategies for organizing our work and looking for patterns/structure, a whole new world will open up to them!
Teacher Specialization
I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a master's degree in Teaching and Mathematics. Not only have I taught math for grades 4-12 over the last 16 years, but I have also worked to improve the practice of current math educators across multiple states for the past 8 years.
