Bio

Hi! My name is Kim Chasteen. I am a math and law teacher from Virginia. I am very enthusiastic about math and like to share my enthusiasm with students. I believe it's important to encourage students to find what works best for them because there is almost always another way to solve a math problem. Math is a skill that needs to be practiced to become proficient, like playing the tuba, playing football or singing. I was a patent attorney for 30 years before becoming a math teacher - I love helping students find joy in (or at least understand) math. Besides being a teacher, I have two children. David is earning his PhD in math from the University of Virginia (math runs in the family!). Brenna is working on her BS in biology with plans to attend veterinary school. My husband is an engineer with NASA - an actual rocket scientist! We also have four 4-legged family members. Kira and Rose are galgas (Spanish greyhounds); Cooper and Joy are whippets.

Teacher Specialization

I have taught high school math for 6 years and am currently tutoring high school math students. I also taught Introduction to Law at the high school level. I have a bachelor's degree in Math from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctorate in Law from the College of William and Mary. I completed the Career Switcher program offered by Virginia to become a licensed teacher in 2017.
