Bio

Hello! I believe in lifelong learning: we can do anything we put our minds to and indeed we can do amazing things! I have boundless hope and curiosity which I try to share with students. I like science and art, music and reading, history and language, and with the name ‘Nine’ I was destined to love math =). I celebrate every attempt - we learn so much from taking risks and making mistakes. I encourage students to try, persist, and maintain a growth mindset. Motivation goes a long way to helping us learn; as a teacher I think my first task is to know each student well enough to understand what motivates them. When I can find ways to connect the learning goals to topics of their interest (ex.math in snowboarding or language in video games), students are more engaged. Making those connections is a creative exercise for me. Combine that with rigorous practice and we see improved results = learning!

Teacher Specialization

I’m a proud graduate of the University of Minnesota, including my Masters in Education focused on ‘Math Brains’. I was a classroom teacher for over 15 years, working with students from kindergarten through high school; most of my experience with middle schoolers. I’m trained and certified as a Montessori adolescent guide, and my children attend a Montessori school. I’ve taught high school French and Civics; middle school - all subjects, especially writing and science; and 2nd grade ESL in Japan.
